Djokovic was deported from Australia before defending his Australian Open title last month because he wasn’t vaccinated against COVID-19. He then won his ninth French Open title last month — tying Rafael Nadal’s record — but missed Wimbledon after being banned from competing because he wasn’t vaccinated against COVID-19. (AP Photo/Frank Augstein) Novak Djokovic’s career Slam bid hinges on his health at U.S. Open By TIM REYNOLDS NEW YORK (AP) — Novak Djokovic said Monday that he’ll get tested “regularly” as he tries to defend his U.S. Open title. And if he tests positive? “I’m sure I’ll have my team around me,” Djokovic said. Djokovic is not vaccinated against COVID-19 — he had been granted an exemption from New York City’s vaccination mandate — which means he’ll need regular testing so that he can compete at Flushing Meadows. Djokovic said he hasn’t missed practice because of quarantine restrictions or other COVID-related issues. He also said he feels “great.” That’s good news because this year’s U.S. Open could be pivotal for him. Djokovic arrived here having played just two tournaments since winning Wimbledon last year because he wasn’t allowed into Australia due to his vaccination status — which led to his deportation ahead of that year’s Australian Open — then was banned from competing at Wimbledon because he wasn’t vaccinated. In between those two events — Australia would bar him from entering again next year as well — Djokovic won his ninth French Open title last month. With Nadal still recovering from knee surgery after withdrawing from Roland Garros early , Djokovic now owns two more major titles than anyone else over the past two years. But if Nadal returns healthy enough later this year or early next year — which seems likely — then both Nadal and Federer will have won more majors than anyone else over that same span. This U.S. Open will be Federer’s last tournament before retiring after two knee surgeries forced him out of competition last season. If Federer beats Djokovic again here (they’ve met three times previously), then Federer will have won more majors than anyone else over that same two-year period. That would leave Djokovic needing another major before this calendar year ends if he wants sole possession of that particular record. The U.S. Open could help him do that. Djokovic said his body feels good despite being sidelined during most of last season because he got sick late last fall with COVID-19 , had lingering symptoms through most of last winter and then was barred from playing because he couldn’t enter Australia or compete at Wimbledon . “Last year was very challenging,” Djokovic said. So what does he hope to accomplish this season? “I don’t know what I’m going to achieve,” Djokovic said. “I’m going step-by-step.” ___ AP Sports Writer Howard Fendrich contributed. ___ More AP tennis: https://apnews.com/hub/tennis and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting.
