Ramadan and Islam – What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is traditionally celebrated according to an Islamic calendar month and it involves fasting in conjunction with worship. The whole purpose is to bring Muslims closer to Allah. It is also called as the month of patience since devotion holds absolute importance. We look forward to it every year with much anticipation not only because it is our religious obligation but also because it teaches us self-control and patience. Since Ramadan marks the beginning of a new Islamic year Muslims await it eagerly. The name itself has an Arabic meaning of “heat” which signifies God’s wrath and as a direct translation “Ramaḍān” means “ scorching heat” which aptly sums up its character. It was this month that saw the Prophet Muhammad receiving the first revelation from Allah. He received it on the night known as “laylat al-qadr”, also called “the night of power“. However, any Muslim will tell you that when practicing this beloved ritual one should be completely committed towards submitting oneself before Allah.
Ramadan: A time for spiritual purification
Ramadan holds varying degrees of significance depending upon where one happens to live. For example if you are in Europe or North America then it may mean an opportunity to get closer to God beyond what is normally feasible throughout rest of the year while if you are living somewhere like Egypt then it becomes extremely important considering how hectic everyday life tends to get there. In short Ramadan has far-reaching effects not just within Islam but also beyond its borders. Muslims around the globe (except those who are ill) fast from sunrise to sunset during this one month each year in order that they may practice self-discipline regardless of whether they are living within Muslim countries or have settled elsewhere. It is during this blessed time that one truly understands what it means “to be Muslim” because fasting during Ramadan encompasses all aspects of life from eating habits and practicing patience towards others including oneself.
